Firefox 18.0 crashes when I close a tab or close the session i.e. hit the red "X"
I installed Firefox 18 on 1/9/2013. I am running on an HP quad processor box with Windows 7 (current), 64 bit addressing and 2 GB of memory. Extensions: HTTPS Everywhere 312, Norton toolbar and protection. Plugins: 11.
Firefox crashes when I close a tab and when I close the session. I have sent crash information at time of crash.

The problem has been solved. Run Norton Internet Security LiveUpdate. Install the patch from Norton. The patch works for me on both my User authority account and my Administration authority account. Please report any problems related to the patch. Otherwise, this problem can be closed as solved. Those users who have altered Norton Internet Security in order to circumvent this problem should restore NIS to its proper state.

Looks like a problem with Norton software (Norton Confidential; [@ coffplgn.dll@0xc109 ])
You will have to disable the involved Norton component and make sure that you have updated your Norton software.
You can also try to contact Norton support.
@cor-el: Please post the documentation that proves the problem is caused by Norton. Once this documentation is available I will open a problem with Norton. A second, and better option would be for Mozilla to contact Symantec/Norton. This method would be faster, easier and would preserve confidential information. Please, never again, ask anyone to disable all or part of their security system.
agreed...this should be fixed with a update on either or both sides. If, everyone of us called it would be inefficient to fix one computer at a time.
do you mean the Norton add-on toolbar or extension thing? Not the actual Norton software?
Today I opened a problem with Symantec. I used the Norton Internet Security support path to start a chat session. I gave this URL to the technician and requested that he send it to his management. I did not have time to allow the technician to inspect the status of my Norton software.
I can open up Firefox in Safe Mode (when option pops up after several crashes) with everything disabled and it works fine. Problem is I can't isolate the exact cause because when I open up FF normal and start disabling add-ons it says "add-on will be disabled upon restart" But when I click restart now, or when I close the browser, the browser registers a crash and the add-ons are stuck with same "add-on will be disabled upon restart" message when browser is brought back up......Any suggestions? I don't like running in Safe Mode/with everything disabled...

The problem is not related to Norton Safe Search as stated in one of the entries above. I could not recreate the problem as described above. On 1/13/2013 the problem, a "bump in the night," disappeared when I began using the account on my PC that has User authority. I then updated this page stating that the problem, what ever the source, had been solved. Later I used the Administration account on my PC where I discovered that the problem still existed.

[18 crashes every time I close a tab] A similar entry for the same problem.
I just expanded an earlier entry: On 1/13/2013 the problem disappeared when I began using the account on my PC that has User authority. I then updated this page stating that the problem, what ever the source, had been solved. Later I used the Administration account on my PC where I discovered that the problem still existed. As of this date and time, I just finished testing Firefox using the Asministration account. I cleared cache and changed the cache management from static to dynamic because I think Firefox has a cache management problem. I retested Firefox and found that the problem still exists with a slight varation, closing the first tab in a group of open tabs does not cause a crash, closing a second tab causes a crash. The crash occurs when using either dynamic or static cache management.
I had the box in options checked for "check for updates but allow me.....", I don't know when or how it happened but it got changed and Firefox automatically updated to version 18 and now it continually crashes when i close tabs or click the red X to close the browser. The problem is with my Norton tool bar. Why is it that Firefox won't notify Norton before they come out with a new version so Norton has time to come up with an update for the tool bar. Norton has always been good to keep up with the latest versions of everything. But there has to be communication before they are released. I do not want to go without my Norton tool bar or my identity safe. My solution will be turn Firefox back to an earlier version until Norton has an update. I run Norton 360 and will not go without my Norton toolbar!
How can you tell the problem is with the Norton toolbar?
Since it's been disabled the problem with Firefox crashing is fixed. The problem always exists when Firefox has an updated version and doesn't wait to release it until Norton has an update for the Norton toolbar. I would go back to an earlier version of Firefox, but don't seem to be finding one anywhere. So, I'm without my Norton toolbar until Norton has an update.
I now have IE9 for my browser. Until the problem between firefox and Norton are resolved, I will be using IE9. At least my norton toolbar and my idenity safe are functional and it's not crashing.
Well here we are on 01/17/2013 and the problem hits when I use my Administration account. The problem does not hit when I use my User account. Microsoft and Norton software are both current. The problem has changed a little. When multiple tabs are open the problem does not hit when closing the first tab. The problem hits when closing the second tab. The problem also hits when using the File, Exit path.

This problem continues to exist in Firefox 18.0.1 because the problem is related to a problem with software from Symantec. For more information see: [[Firefox 18.0.1 crashes after closing tab or Exit |https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/947601]]
I run Norton 360 and have the norton tool bar and identity safe. I was having the problem too with firefox crashing when closing the tabs or clicking the red X. I updated my Norton to the 2013 toolbar. I can not disable it. When I tried, firefox would crash. I know the problem was with Norton, because before I updated from the 2012 toolbar, I had disabled it and everything was working fine. I read one post that said to reinstall firefox 18. That only made matters worse. Now I have no firefox at all. It would not launch at all, I got an error that said "could not be found". I wish I could go back to firefox 17 until this matter is resolved but, can't find it. I am forced to use IE at present and I hate it. I love firefox, how can I get it back and it work?
News 1. Mozilla has told me that there will be a fix by the end of the month. 2. I have asked Mozilla to contact me as soon as the fix is available. 3. I will monitor Norton and Firefox from 08:00 to 17:00 CT and update this forum entry when the fix becomes available. 4. Because the most current release of Firefox is 18.0.1, most future updates will be done to forum entry [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/que.../947601]
