FF 38.0.5 crash/hangs

FF 38.0.5 is hanging on exit too much to be viable. The crash reports don't seem to reflect the actual number of times the hang occurs, at least 5 times a day, but here is the most recent report:

The crash report is several pages of data that we need to see.

In the address bar, type about:crashes<enter>. Note: If any reports do not have BP in front of the numbers/letters, click it and select Submit.

Using your mouse, mark the most resent 7 - 10 crash reports, and copy them. Now go to the reply box below and paste them in.

Hi Jdolt,

All we need is the Crash ID including its preceding bp- You will not notice it in Post a Reply preview but forum software generates a link after you post

This has already been discovered as a bug and is marked critical. (Currently #6 topcrash @13K per week) That particular signature is new in Fx38 AFAIK but I note Fx37 had unresolved shutdown hangs.

I presume it is hanging and forcing a shutdown, rather than just being a problem when you elect to shutdown Firefox. Can you try to post a CrashID that you know is from an instance where

  1. You did not deliberately try to shutdown Firefox
  2. You are using Firefox's safe mode (Lets rule out extensions, especially toolbars or security related ones as part of the cause)
  • If possible add a comment when submitting the report, mentioning it is a forced shutdown; if that is the case.

This may turn out to be one of the bug signatures that has multiple possible causes. Do you still even get crashes in Firefox's safemode ?

As Firefox is not viable at present it may be worth installing a third party, additional browser: Firefox Portable ESR; until we can get to the bottom of this problem.

For variety of reasons that is unlikely to crash, and does not interfere with the current standard Firefox Release, it is a separate install, and will even run off a memory stick.

Thanks, too many options for an old f**t like me, BUT, 38.0.5 is HANGING ON EXIT ONLY. It seems to hold in the hung mode for several minutes, such as: Do my thing for whatever amount of time, click HOME (about:blank), click History - Clear Recent History - Clear ALL - Clear Now and click the X to close, within 5 minutes try to go to another website/page/bookmark and the Crash Report dialogue comes up and I have to click the Quit FF to then have it open to the link I clicked after the original close/exit.

Hope this clarifies the question enough. I'd cleared all previous Crash Reports so cannot post them, sorry.

Thanks Guys.

Many users find this problem goes away if they exit using the menu instead of the red "X" button. I'm not sure of the exact difference, but if you can get into the habit, it may work around whatever the problem is.

Exit using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "power" button in the lower right corner
  • (menu bar - tap the Alt key to activate if needed) File > Exit

NONE of your suggestions work. FF38 is apparently so full of holes and bugs that I will most likely uninstall it and go back to the hated IE. Totally frustrating.

Bye guys, I'm done. No need to reply or ask additional questions, I won't likely answer.

Thanks for trying.

A lot of Norton users are frustrated with Firefox this week, since the two programs are not playing well together.

If the basic steps of

  • Exit Firefox using the menu and not the "red X" button, and
  • Disable the Norton Toolbar extension

did not help with your shutdown crashes, I suggest trying again later this week. Symantec issues regular updates, so by then the latest Symantec LiveUpdate and Firefox update might have resolved the issue.
