Bookmarks: "Sort By Name"--Why can Firefox not remember this setting?
I sorted by name a while back and today I add bookmarks and they are at the bottom of the Bookmarks Menu. Do I have to resort them every time I add one?
Also, I keep on seeing these useless "Unsorted Bookmarks" and "Recent Tags" and "Bookmarks Toolbar" wasting space and distracting me. I want 1 Bookmarks area for everything. So simple. So logical. So easy to manage. 1 folder with lots of subfolders. Like anybody organizes anything. Is this possible? Who even uses Toolbars? People with Amnesia? Who can't remember keyboard shortcuts you use time and time again? With each revision software just treats us as if we have less and less brain power. Its a disturbing trend these days.
If web designers made cars they'd forget to install a steering wheel. There's an enormous lack of common sense in tech today. Its like they design by principle with a computer but don't actually use it to hone the design.

Sort by Name is a one-time function. Firefox does not auto-sort new bookmarks; they are always added at the end of whatever "container" you are adding them to.
You could try finding an add-on that alphabetizes automatically. I found this one, but it has mixed reviews:
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/auto-sort-bookmarks/
To avoid adding bookmarks to Unsorted Bookmarks, do not add bookmarks by clicking the star icon on the toolbar.

-- why not spend a day here helping users with questions and see how amazingly varied the population of Firefox users is, representing every level of ability. You might accidentally develop a little empathy and perspective.
It may be worth noting that although sort by name is a one time function if you cut and paste the sorted content to another location for example a new folder that then stays in that order.
it is easy to search so maybe it is considered unnecessary to sort the bookmarks library by alpha order.
As you like keyboard shortcuts Ctrl+L will move focus onto the address bar, and you may then do searches including control characters: an asterisk and a space, prior to the search will limit the search to bookmarks
- Keyboard shortcuts - Perform common Firefox tasks quickly
- Address bar autocomplete suggestions in Firefox_changing-results-on-the-fly
You may also add tags and again it is easy to search for bookmarks by specific tag or only tagged bookmarks
Hello moz2u; jscher and John99,
May I join the party ? Cause I am really confused about this 'bookmark-thing' (I obviously have way less brain power than you, moz2u ..... )
I've managed to create some tabs (no clue how I did it though; I quess FF deserves the credit for those tabs and not I)
I want so bad to create some more tabs, but no matter how I try: nothing seems to work.
I started by clicking the star icon ...... and I now found out that that was my first mistake (thank you, jscher ! )
Than these lines appear: 'unsorted'; 'recent' and 'toolbars' ......... and I just sit there and stare, not knowing what to do .......... help, ....... please ?
Greetings from Happ112 (who lacks quite a few brain cells)
Hi Happy112, when you click the star icon, Firefox saves a bookmark in the Unsorted Bookmarks container.
To move the bookmark to another, more convenient, location, use that Page Bookmarked panel that appears, or click the star again to display Edit This Bookmark. The wide button opens a list of recent used folders. The button to the right of it opens a drop-list where you can view all available folders and create new ones. I've attached a couple screenshots.
The Unsorted Bookmarks container is listed on the toolbar button that drops down the Bookmarks Menu. You also can view your Unsorted Bookmarks from the Bookmarks Sidebar or the Library dialog:
- Sidebar
- Ctrl+b (assuming the page doesn't intercept it)
- (menu bar) View > Sidebar > Bookmarks
- Library
- Ctrl+Shift+b
- Bookmarks menu > Show All Bookmarks

Hi Happy112, Reply complete with links to exercise those brain cells.
Tabs in Firefox speak are the browser pages within a browser Window screen and line up with "Tabs" that resemble what you may see in a paper card index. The tabs are along the top of the toolbar and allow you to quickly switch between webpages.
- Use tabs to organize lots of websites in a single window
- Get started with Firefox - An overview of the main features
Bookmarks, called favourites (favorites) in IE parlance are the web addresses used as reminders or indexes. Look at
- Get started with Firefox - An overview of the main features_bookmark-a-website
Note that has animations and short video clips. It is a long article scroll up and down to see more. - Bookmarks in Firefox
- Use bookmark folders to organize your bookmarks Note the bookmarks menu, and bookmarks toolbar are special folders.
- Not to be confused with taGs that you may use with bookmarks
Bookmark Tags - Categorize bookmarks to make them easy to find
I do not doubt your intelligence, but I do recall you saying you are using your first computer, so this will be quite a steep learning curve for you.
You would be better asking your own question rather than jumping in on another question, that helps keeping the questions on topic. Cheers,
Grumpy.
'Didn't dare to ask my own question about bookmarks/tabs; I was too afraid to get a slap on the wrist from someone callled Grumpy ......
I'll go over all the links you gave me and see if I can get those brain cells to work properly .......
Thank you !
Cheers ,
<tt>Dopey</tt>
A few hours later:
Somewhere in the distance I hear the faint ringing of bells ........
When I thought that I was on topic I was not .....
Bookmarks have nothing to do with creating tabs, do they ?
Bookmarks help the browser find my favourite websites, right ?

To jscher:
Thank you; I'll be rereading the info you gave me over and over again until it sinks in (if at all .......)
It's a bit harder for me, not only because I've only bought my first computer a few months ago, but also because I'm dealing with two 'foreign' languages: computer-lingo and English (how's that for an excuse ? )
Greetings from Happy112, who'll be singing a happy tune as soon as she can wrap her brain around all this 'computer-stuff' !
A little later: I won't be singing any happy tunes just yet:
I just went over all the info, only to come to the conclusion that I already knew all that but I can't make head or tail of it: so, I've made some bookmarks (and quite a few even ! ) -- but they're just sitting there, not doing anything for me; all I want is to create some new tabs .......
I wanted to attach some screenshots, but apart from the fact that they're in Dutch: they disappear as soon as I click on another button.
It's official: you can write me off as a 'hopeless case' .....

Happy112, The idea is if you have a support question about Firefox, such as how to use bookmarks or tabs, then if you can not find the information by looking ask your own question. (If you start a new question about this subject, make a quick reply to let us know, so we may look for it) As a demonstration exercise to use bookmarks and create tabs
- Use keyboard shortcut Ctrl+B (Hold Control, press B)
That will open the Bookmarks sidebar. - If necessary open a folder such as Unsorted bookmarks - by clicking the folder
- Once you can see a bookmark in the sidebar right click it and use Open in new tab
- It should open that bookmark as a tab
- Did that work ?
If you are having problems you really would do better asking your own new question. Moz2u is probably not too pleased to get off topic emails if following this thread..

Happy112's post is a perfect example of how important it is for software designers to first do things by previous convention if at all possible to enable as fast a learning curve as possible. Most everything on your computer is sorted alphabetically so this should always be the default. If the designer wants to add other options that's great. But not as a default setting of course. That just stunts our learning curve. The faster someone can use and benefit from your product that faster its popularity and your wealth will increase. These are concepts that are somewhat absent from many software designers' minds as is blatantly evidenced by their products. Not sure why since this is just basic logic. But it needs to change. It severely inhibits the world's productivity and you can bet our productivity hinges on efficient and productive software to get jobs done better and faster.
Even this page is unconventional for no apparent reason: There is no way of replying directly to a specific post. You have to copy and paste the previous thing you're replying to in your reply at the bottom. Or did I miss something? Every decent forum has a Reply button below each post. That's convention. That has purpose. If I'm wrong here, please enlighten me. It seems Mozilla thrives on doing things differently for no reason at all. Or is it just a lack of organization because of a lack of funds because its a non-profit? I would love to know .

Every browser I have ever used adds new bookmarks to the end of the existing list by default, and displays its bookmarks menu in the order added by default. Is that not your experience?

This forum was built on top of the Knowledge Base platform and sacrifices a lot of features of other forum software to enable closer integration with that resource. Use the Quote link below a reply if you need to refer to a particular reply. Anyway, this platform probably will change in the next 12 months so don't hold your breath for any fixes.

I do suggest things when I can. Absolutely. And on many other forums as well. My comment was a general one to software in general, especially operating systems. I should have mentioned that. But software designers should encourage keyboard shortcuts much more. It staggering how much time people waste by using the mouse when they don't have to. When I look at how most people navigate to get somewhere on their systems I am stunned at the lack of speed of execution. And its all because they just didn't start using a better system of control. Once they see its superiority they will embrace it. Designers can encourage or discourage this. Apple is the absolutely reining king of this kind of discouragement. Microsoft seems to be gravitating more and more towards this as well and its worrying. It speaks much about how they perceive their user base.

Nope. The most efficient system I ever used was Opera's older version (up to version 12). That was just so well organized, so easy to edit, so easy to manage. They also didn't have a big enough window for inserting the first bookmark but it was bigger than Firefox. Its like the designers are working with 10 bookmarks on their system. Many of us work with thousands. Why would anyone want such a small window? At least you should be able to reconfigure it and the system should remember that setting.
I can't remember how Chrome's Bookmarks work as it was far worse than Firefox. Most users hate Chrome's Bookmarks system so I guess I'm vindicated partially there. :) It makes you wonder if the designers ever use their own products.

Yes, I realized that later. Thank you. It should say Reply though (like everybody else) and just include the original message in the reply window or offer 2 versions: Reply and Reply with Quote.
Its so vital not to change conventions unless its really necessary. Are you listening software designers? I hope so. It will benefit you enormously. And help the world. Software runs the world now. Its efficiency is vital for our well being. What you do can affect so many. It really matters.

Sorry, I doubt that any software designers are reading this support forum, unless someone pointed them to a particular thread.
Probably someone mentioned in an earlier thread the input site which is used to gather feedback and prioritize issues for future versions of Firefox:
https://input.mozilla.org/feedback/firefox
Mozilla also uses mailing lists to discuss development issues:
https://lists.mozilla.org/listinfo
To request a specific enhancement, you can file a bug, or vote for an existing one:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/enter_bug.cgi https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/page.cgi?id=etiquette.html https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/page.cgi?id=voting.html
If you want to try to build a constituency for a feature, you can try social media, e.g., Reddit.
