Went abroad for 3mos. Came back to 40K mails in inbox. Can't read, delete or open anything (Thunderbird locks up). Any fix?

Went abroad for 3mos, left my Thunderbird email on for kids to use. Came home to find nearly 40,000 emails in my inbox (90% spam). I can't open, read, delete or file anything...Mozilla simply locks up. I even tried waiting overnight to see if it would finish loading, but no it's just frozen. How can I get in to delete, read and file w/o locking up?
