With Firefox 5 for mac, web pages take too long to begin to load

I've a macbook pro, OS X 10.6.5, Firefox 5.0.1. Each time I try to load a web page, also a simple Google search or a Facebook post, Firefox hang on "connecting" for many seconds, with nearly no network I/O activity at all. Then, after 30/40 seconds, the page magically loads quickly. The problem doesn't happen with Safari or Google Chrome.

Even on a Mac you have a firewall or possibly other security software that can cause such hangs.

You can also try alternative DNS servers.

@cor-el I know the Mac firewall, I wanted only to say that, on the contrary of many firewalls for PC, that for mac does not have thousand abstruse options. And however Safari, Google Chrome, etc. work, as I wrote before, so firewall and DNS should not be the problem.
