FF always starts with "Getting Started with Mozilla Firefox"; I want my start page but won't allow.

FF will never let me set my home page. Always reverts back to "Getting Started with Mozilla Firefox". I want Google to be my home page which I have used in earlier versions of FF. Rev 8.0.1 will not allow any other home page or HTTP file. I have deleted the "prefs.js" file and FF just rebuilds it with the "Geting ..." page again. What is wrong?
