Clearing recent history caused ff to lock up in FF8 so I upgraded to FF9 and it doesn't lock up, but it doesn't clear history either.

Which items are you trying to clear?

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
