how do i 'exit' so i can recover what was opened instead of ''quit' and loosing all webpages
on most versions of firefox i can do a 'save and exit' so when i restart all my web pages start back up. running on linux with V17.0.7 i only have the option to quit, losing all the pages that were open, how do i change it so it will 'save and exit'?

You should first of all not that the session restore system may be slightly fragile and personally I would not recommend relying on it. You should bookmark pages if they are important. You will also have such sites in your History but in some circumstances that gets overwritten or deleted so again making use of Bookmarks is sensible for anything important. Firefox does attempt to make an autobackup of bookmarks,but there is no such facility for History.
IIRC the session restore feature development may have ceased and there may have been talk of replacing the system.
I run several recent Firefox versions from Mozilla and one from my Linux distro on Linux including ESR fx17.0.7 note that is intended for developers or Enterprise etc.use.
You should just need to set the option to restore previous tabs instead of starting on homepages
- Restore previous session - Configure when Firefox shows your most recent tabs and windows_configuring-session-restore
- see How to set the home page_set-what-pages-open-when-firefox-starts
- use Edit -> Preferences -> |General|
-> When Firefox Starts [Show my windows and tabs from last time] - Startup, home page, tabs, and download settings
