By now I am believing the answer is obvious. I got a message where the screen says "it looks like you're using an outdated version of Firefox," then basically, "click here to update." If I updated every time I get a message saying something is outdated I would have all kinds of jerkwater programs costing me unnecessary money, not to mention a bunch of tracking adware slowing my computer's performance.

But I believe this is the real deal--but you still might tell me if there is a simple way to tell.

Thanks

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer. Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.
