Recently updated to Firefox 34.0, the problem is you can change to your preferred search engine and use it during the session. Unfortunately when you close this session and return later Firefox 34 defaults to google as the search engine and you must manually change each and every time to your preferred search engine. This does not appear to be resolvable in any other manner.

Try to delete the search.json file and possible search-metadata.json and search.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder to reset the search engines to the default.

Firefox will rebuild the search.json file from the default search engines in the "browser\searchplugins" folder in the Firefox program folder and the searchplugins folder in the Firefox profile folder.

You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

If you do not keep changes after a restart or otherwise have problems with preferences, see:

Suggest you work through this - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/search-bar-add-change-manage-search-engines-firefox And strongly recommend you give the Firefox extension Context Search a try - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/context-search/
