How can I preserve former email-addresses without the notice: cannot login, access denied?

When starting up Thunderbird there is always the message: access denied for former email-addresses that are no longer in service. I would like to keep the old messages, but block the futile attempts to login for these accounts. Can I configurate the settings so that the old messages from former addresses are preserved, but Thunderbird no longer tries to make contact to these accounts from the past?

I suggest either of these options:

  1. go to each of the 'old' accounts -> Settings -> Server Settings and uncheck "Check for new messages at startup" and uncheck "Check for new messages every ..." That should keep TB from going to that account unless you click 'Get Messages' without specifying which account.
  2. export mail from these accounts and then delete the accounts

There is an add-on to TB which allows import and export of emails in various formats to a separate storage medium (external disk, thumb drive, etc.).

The instructions on how to download and install it can be found at http://barryduggan.info/exportMail.php
