I can not go in the "file" when I attache. The file can not recognize anything. How can it be solved?

I am just starting to use the thunderbird as my new mailer in Japan. Today was first time to try send a message with an attachement. I opened the attachement function and went to the "file". I have no idea what you're talking about. Can you explain what you do in more detail? You can also post a screenshot if that helps to visualize the problem.
