On a regular basis I receive emails in German but cannot read them. Not certain how to translate them in Thunderbird 38.0.1. Do I need translating software installed in Thunderbird?

You could try this: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunderbird/addon/s3google-translator/

and there appear to be others.

GIYF: "thunderbird translate" found several more candidates.
