I have two gmail accounts. on one account thunderbird dowloads all new messages. the other account just one message at a time. how do I fix this?

I have to repeatedly click get messages for the problem account. sometimes they come in one at a time. then maybe 3. then 1. then six. then 1, 1, 1, etc.

my other account fetches all new messages at once.

POP or IMAP? are both equally setup? do both have the same setup on gmail-server?
