A newer version already exist (mac OS)
I was running version 42 on Mac OS of Firefox and when I tried to upgrade to Firefox 43.03 it stated that a newer version of Firefox already exists. I checked the version of my Firefox by going to "about firefox" and it showed version 42.0.
So I reinstalled version 42 again and installed version 43 and it worked without the message.
This suggests that the version of Firefox was upgraded or changed so it was not recognized as version 42. Can anyone tell me what the install examines when installing so I can determine what changed?

I think an Application on my Mac changed firefox in a manner to make the new downloaded Firefox version is outdated.

It could have been a bug, not a major one but just a line of code caught sideways, it happens I suppose xD
This is not about the Firefox version, but about file dates.
If there a problem with updating or with the permissions then best is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox application and save the disk image file to the desktop
- Firefox 43.0.3: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/
- Trash the current Firefox application (open the Applications folder in the Finder and drag the Firefox application to the Trash) to do a clean (re)install
- Install the new version that you have downloaded

Your personal data like bookmarks is stored in the Firefox profile folder, so you won't lose personal data when you uninstall and (re)install or update Firefox, but make sure NOT to remove personal data when you uninstall Firefox as that will remove all Firefox profile folders and you lose your personal data.
