Email link in Firefox will not open new message window in Thunderbird if Thunderbird already running in Windows 10. Need to shut down Thunderbird first?

Email links in Firefox (46.0.1) will not open a new message window in Thunderbird (45.1.0) if Thunderbird is already running. Only if Thunderbird is not running will a request to open Thunderbird result (windows 10.1) and the new message window will open. Solutions to open new message window while Thunderbird is running.
