When writing an e-mail the font size will sometimes change when moving to the next line of text. It's always smaller.

Sounds like you may be possibly inadvertently making Tbird think that you are entering into the space known | treated as a signature (which is smaller often times and uses the 'pre-formatted' font sizing.
Consider checking / modifying the `Global Composition Preferences' for that account / profile to reset / change this behavior globally for that account.
