When I return to a web page, I want it to go back to the same place I was, not at the top.
Ummm, I don't know what else to add.

The only real way to avoid this is;
Right click whatever link and select: Open New Window/Tab. Once you are done, close that and you are back where you started.

On pages that Firefox keeps in cache, the Back button will take you back to the previous point. However, some servers instruct Firefox not to store the page or force an update, and on those cases, the Back button will take you back to the top and probably to a freshly reloaded page.
As Fred noted, you can keep your place in the page by directing links to a new tab. In addition to the right-click method, you can either:
- Ctrl+click the link
- middle-click the link with a middle mouse button or the scroll wheel
