Loving T'bird as an alternate to the more expensive mail client...  ;)

I am a backup fanatic... having lost my OS drive before, I've redoubled my efforts to have viable backups for my data. To that end, I'm trying to find the best way to backup ALL my mail files to a simple file that can be imported into a clean install (should that be necessary.) What is the best way to do this with Thunderbird (v45)?

I've found ImportExportTools>Save all mail files in the Tools menu, it created a 1.7GB file... which sounds about right. Is this the correct method, and is that file going to import directly into a fresh install?

Any other hints are welcome...
