My bookmarks have disappeared and I have no backup dated between 9/4 and 12/27.
When I opened Firefox, all of my modifications (such as add-ons and extensions) were gone as well as my bookmarks. I've gone to the places.sqlite files and Old Firefox and there is no history between 9/4 and 12/27. Can you help me get my bookmarks back, please?

Hi lmitche, sorry to hear about the problem.
Could you check whether Firefox performed a Refresh? That procedure creates a folder on your Windows desktop named Old Firefox Data and moves your old profile (settings) folder into it. If you drill down into that folder, you can check the file modification dates, and the dates on the files in the bookmarkbackups folder to get an idea of whether it has the missing data.
You also could check whether you have multiple profiles in the standard location. Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either
- "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
- (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
- type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter
In the first table on the page, click the "Show Folder" button. This should launch a new window listing various files and folders in Windows Explorer.
Make a note of the ending of the folder name in the Windows Explorer address bar, which is the name of your current profile. Then click the word Profiles (just to the left of the current folder name) to move up a level and see whether there are other profile folders there. If so, check to see whether they look more up-to-date than the one you're using.
Could you let us know what you find and then we can suggest next steps.
The Old Firefox folder doesn't have anything between 9/4 and 12/27 and I don't have any other profiles.
Are you logged in as your usual Windows user? Each user has her/his own profiles...
Did anything happen to your system that could have rolled it back to September 4th user data, such as a Windows "System Restore"? Of course, even then, you would expect to have complete data as of the restore date (although this feature is somewhat flaky).
Since you are familiar with the places.sqlite file, could you check whether Windows has a recent backup? Right-click the file, choose Properties, then click the Previous Versions tab. Anything promising here? If you want to try swapping in one of those earlier files, you may want to back the current one up first. Please exit Firefox completely so that any deferred updates are completed before backing up this file or restoring an earlier version.
