Firefox 56 starts every old or new page with a light green screen. Why?

After a success-less upgrade to FF Quantum (57) I quickly went back to the 'good old' FF 56 version. I disliked Quantum COMPLETELY because most of my comfortable add-ons were all of a sudden unusable. Mozilla moved me to a newly designed home but forced me to leave all my old furniture behind... Not a good policy!

But now: after I went back to FF 56.02 I had to re-activate some of the old add-ons that were de-activated by FF Quantum. When this was done, I have trouble with my FF 'new page' screen. The old one (with tiles of visited sites) seldom comes up. And EVERY page that I open (a new one OR an existing one) starts for a few seconds as a totally blank GREEN screen. Also the progress loading indicator line is green.

I cannot find out what cause this change and how I can get rid of it. Anyone?

Thanks in advance, Wim

Can you attach a screenshot?

I assume that you did check the default colors?

The default "empty content area" color is white, so green is unexpected. Perhaps it is something you re-enabled that you weren't using recently.

Do you use any extensions that change the appearance of the browser? You can check the Add-ons page, Extensions panel.

Do you use any themes? You can check the Add-ons page, Appearance panel.

Do you use any of these methods of modifying the user interface:

  • Stylish extension (2.1.1 or earlier)
  • userChrome.css file

Do you use any of these methods of restyling web pages:

  • Stylish, Stylus, or xStyle extension
  • userContent.css file

Hello, Thanks for your reply!

After I went back from useless FFQ57 to FF56 I missed the status bar where I displayed my add-ons DCurrency and Foxclocks. To get the statusbar back I installed the add-on Status-4-Evar. I thought this could be the perpetrator, but even if I disable it, the newgreenscreen keeps coming. No other new add-ons were added, and none of the ones you mentioned are part of my system. Maybe the newgreenscreen is just an annoying useless but innocent display feature. Still would appreciate if you have other suggestion. Thanks, Wim

UP Date Video Drivers.

Did you think of asking for help with anything with 57+ before going back ? After kicking it it can look just like 56.0.2 ( do not use tiles) and a thousand other things, if you want. there also is Extensions search page that looks for alternatives to the old abandoned and security issued addons you use.

This is just for 57+ if return : https://www.howtogeek.com/333805/how-to-change-or-customize-firefoxs-new-tab-page/ https://www.howtogeek.com/333110/how-to-customize-firefox-quantum-and-remove-the-white-space-around-the-title-bar/ https://www.howtogeek.com/334716/how-to-customize-firefoxs-user-interface-with-userchrome.css/ https://mozilla.github.io/extension-finder/ https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/extensions/ Lot's more if ask.

As for this issue : Going back : unfortunately 56.0.2 and below is no longer safe to use for every day use do to security issues. But 52.5.2 ESR is. It will continue to get security updates until May 2018, and you can download and install it from this page: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/all/ Note : Legacy Extensions will be deleted or removed in any version update after May 2018.

You should make a backup of your Profile before going back and just because: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

Hello PK,

Your general suggestions do not address/solve my (small) greenscreenproblem.

For the time being I am NOT tending to switch back to FF57Q. For the main add-ons that made previous versions of FF 'my warm home' I have not been able to find alternatives: 1. TabMixPlus to change appearances/behavior of tabs to my preferences (used to it for 5/6yrs already). Nothing comes close to TMP in FF57. 2. GoogleLite search bar on the top of my page: I use it 20-30 times per day. 3. DCurrency and FoxClocks to display them in the statusbar (that now is gone)

I will see what the future brings (updates of TMP and GL?), and wait if I will stay with FF or (with a sad heart) move to another browser that has a better updated range of add-ons.

FF disappoints me VERY strongly by its policy, suddenly changing to a brandnew update and call more than half of the existing tools 'legacy' - which is a ridiculous name for 'unusable old-fashioned shit'. FF leaves 10's of thousands dedicated users empty-handed! Wim

Hello Cor-El,

You did it. Problem solved. Thanks. FF had autochanged my color preferences, apparently. I never changed anything there, was even not aware of the option. But after your notification I had a look and saw the light green color there. When I changed it to 'system colors' the problem was solved.

Thanks again.

And let's hope FF Quantum will quickly be available for tons of 'legacy add-ons'. The dump is a shame...
