For the past month I have been getting "popstate" .dat folders in each of my email accounts. I followed instructions and deleted the unnecessary ones but they key coming back.

if you create an exception on your anti virus product for the Thunderbird profile folders do the folders keep coming back?

I will figure out how to do that and give it a try, thanks!!! I have had the same lap top, email and anti virus protection for 2 years and haven't made any changes. Suddenly this is giving me issues and my printer doesn't work half the time (spooling).

Thanks again!

Unfortunately this didn't work.

Q: Do you use a product called CCleaner ?

Q: When you deleted the popstate.dat files, did you delete 'all' of them or only the additional ones? Q: Did you delete them via Folder Pane or did you access the Profile folder mail account folders and delete them? Q: If accessed profile folders, did you perform this whilst Thunderbird was clsoed

No, I am not familiar with C Cleaner. is this something you recommend?

I only deleted the additional ones and I went through troubleshooting - profile folder- show folder,(screen shot below) and deleted them from there and in my email also

I believe Thunderbird was still open.

re : I am not familiar with C Cleaner. is this something you recommend?

CCleaner is ok generally, but if used on computer you should make any thunderbird file or folder exempt as it can delete required files.

re :I believe Thunderbird was still open. If thunderbird was still running then nothing would be deleted as the files would be open and being used.

  • Use the same method to access profile folder.
  • Then exit thunderbird - this is important.
  • Delete the additional popstate.dat files.
  • Restart Thunderbird.

I have Trend Micro, and I did add Thunderbird to the exception list. i followed these instructions, But just a few hours later the folders started appearing again.

I keep getting these also. Have deleted them 3 times. Never seems to be anything in them but would sure like to stop them from appearing.

After 6 months of that nonsense I finally gave up and switched to AT&T/Yahoo.

Exit Thunderbird - this is important Access profile name folder click on 'Mail' access the pop mail account Delete all the 'popstate.dat' files This will result in redownloading anything you have in the server Inbox.

If you have any programs that clean up files and that can include some AV products, then thunderbird needs to be made exempt. This specifically means the 'Roaming/Thunderbird' folder and not just the Thunderbird program.
