I've used Thunderbird as client for multiple email addresses for years. Over last weeks I started getting sudden crash and crash report screen after completing an email send (with file attachment). The problem seems now to have worsened - when I pick a file attachment using the file picker - Thunderbird crashes - every time. Strangely, on occasion MS Excel starts up immediately after the crash, or I get a "there's a problem with Office" screen. I have now uninstalled Office and Click-to-Run service - but no improvement. Problem still exists when I start Thunderbird with all add-on disabled. Problem does not exist when I start my windows in safemode (with network).

This is now a serious problem - can't send any attachments for my work!! Help !!

The crash report has a red flag for spCapBtnLdr.pdb, which belongs to Chica Password Manager. Is that program installed and managing TB passwords?

This suggests the problem is due to a security or antivirus program that is set to scan outgoing mail. It's generally recommended to disable scanning of email and SSL connections by changing the settings in your AV program or adding the TB profile folder as an exception (depending on the options of the particular AV program).

I've tried switching off virus email scanning and firewall (temporarily) as suggested by sfhowes but no impact on resolving the issue.

This crash is likely related to the use of ESET product.

Start Windows in safe mode. Then start Thunderbird

I have contacted ESET support and they have run me through disabling ESET web/email protection and firewall to test whether problem can be resolved in TB. Unfortunately with ESET disabled problem still exists - crash IDs above are crashes with ESET disabled.

I have noticed some irregular behaviour around MS Excel for same period of TB issue. 1. Occasionally Excel fires up new file directly after TB crash. 2. Tonight I received attached ESET notification directly after TB crash. 3. If I have an Excel file open and TB crashes - then it freezes and blanks the Excel window - not responding..

No closer to attaching files to emails - and getting increasingly frustrated. Thank you for any further help :)

Whoop - ESET Password Manager disabled and suddenly all working well.

Huge thanks to both of you (sfhowes & Wayne Mery) for your kind and generous help :)

ESET have requested details of any resolution - so hopefully will sort a fix to the problem :)
