I have a 160 GB data limit. In the last 30 days Firefox has accessed 154 GB. I do not stream anything nor do I download large files. What is Firefox doing? Almost all add-ons have been disabled.

Maybe check this:

See also the about:networking page. You can open "about:" pages via the location/address bar

  • "about:" is a protocol to access special pages

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

I followed the ideas submitted and reset the data usage counter to zero. After 24 hours Firefox still used 7 GB. I don't know what else to do. I will use another browser and copy the tabs.

Can you explain more about your GB limit?

I am on DSL and the broadband limit is 150 GB per month.

I never stream. The only time I would stream is YouTube and I very seldom use that. All my Firefox tabs are news outlets (Newsmax, Hot Air, Breitbart and Newsbusters).

My wife occasionally listens to music on YouTube but she uses Opera.

I have tried to access the same news URL's on Firefox and on Opera. Firefox has a heavier load on data usage. I don't know why.
