I'm not entirely sure when this happened, but I now have it for over 2 months. It's never really bothered me and doesn't appear to actually DO anything, but it is curious and may turn out to be something I did, or some obvious setting, but I can't find anything specifically about this.

There is a Firefox icon which is pinned to the top of my laptop screen. I can't right click on it, it doesn't appear to do anything when I click on it. I can move it from side to side, but can't move it to another display if I have multiple displays connected. Also, I can't move it away from the top of the screen. The icon is always displayed, over all other apps, it's small so not that intrusive, but I'd really like to know what it is? Image below is a screencap - top of the screen. Very curious.

I am running Windows 10 Home on a Lenovo Yoga tablet PC. Firefox is version 77.0.1 (64 bit).

Thanks, Dan P.

Hi Dan, I only ever see that icon paired with either a camera icon, a microphone icon, or both to indicate that one of my tabs is watching/listening. I don't know why it is appearing alone on your screen.

Is it associated with visiting particular websites?

Can you inspect this icon with the Browser Toolbox ?

No, it's not. I can close all browser windows and it's still there.

Could be a problem with sessionstore.jsonlz4.

You can check for problems with the sessionstore.jsonlz4 file in the Firefox profile folder that stores session data.

  • delete sessionstore.jsonlz4 and sessionstore.js

When sessionstore.jsonlz4 is deleted you lose pinned tabs and open tabs and you will have to recreate them, so if necessary make a note or bookmark them.
sessionstore.jsonlz4 is only present in the Firefox profile folder when Firefox is closed.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

Will give these a shot!

After you close all browser windows, is Firefox running in the background? Check the Windows 10 Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc). If it's your first use, you need to click "More details" at the bottom, and then multiple tabs should appear. Click the Details tab, then click the Name column heading to sort by name. Are any instances of firefox.exe running here? If you've allowed a decent time to shut down, you could try killing it by right-clicking firefox.exe and choosing End Task or End Process.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link}

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?
