when choosing to download current version of plugins the only option is to save or cancil - not run - how do i get to run programs, such as, adobe, or java

I've just made Firefox my default browser and it suggested that my adobe flash player, amongst other things is out dated but when i click on the "download now" button nothing happens just a box that suggests "save" or 'cancel" but nothing else it never starts downloading

Save the setup file, close Firefox, than run the installer. The Flash installer has to install files for Firefox, and Firefox has to be closed for that to happen.
