How do I keep firefox from opening with something I did not ask for?

This can happen if Firefox didn't close properly the last time. If that happens then Firefox will try to restore that last session. You will have to check that in the Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) if it happens frequently and you do not get the Crash Reporter.
