My laptop, after is turned on does not show no icons, nothing other than the trash bin icon the rest of the screen is black. What can I do to restore it?

Do a system restore or system reboot,,go to start and type system restore there, then find a date when you know your computer was working,,if that dont work shut down restart and hit f8 (keep hitting during restart), then a screen should come up that say restore to a configuration that workied.
