How do I make permanent the http:// in the Firefox homepage instead of about.home when I click on the little house icon?

When I start up Firefox or click on the little house icon when it's already up, the start page always has "about.home" in the menu bar instead of "http://" and whatever the site address is. How to I make the opening bar read http:// permanently so that I can easily insert new addresses into it?
