downloaded Firefox 4; type in search term; no action takes place

Firefox 4 comes up as my start up page. When I type in a term and hit enter, the program takes no action whatsoever. In order to search, I have to use my dropdown menu to go to the previous Firefox, which then works normally. I would like to have the new Firefox 4 work or return to the previous version. I have windows 7.

If you have AVG Safe Search installed, disable it in the Add-ons | Extensions menu (click the Firefox button to go there).

It blocks use of the Enter key in the location bar.

Try running Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode. If it functions properly in that configuration, then one of your other add-ons is the culprit.
