Firefox does not remember passwords or user id

I'm using Firefox version 4.01. It won't save my user id or passwords to any sites I visit. It always asks if I want to save them and I always say yes, but they still won't. I had the previous version of Firefox and this never happened. I wonder if this is a problem with 4.01. Thank you.

I've given up on Firefox 4.1 as far as remembering passwords and user IDs also. It appears that no one else has any idea how to fix the problem, including the people that designed it. I figured someone would be able to give me an answer, but I guess that was wishful thinking.
