Ad Block Plus is not blocking ads

I downloaded ad block plus 3 years ago and it worked perfectly. Suddenly, it stopped blocking ads. I have tried to use the troubleshooting advice, and have followed the parts I understand. But it still does not work, although it seems to have been downloaded because I see the option of removing it when I go to Tools and Options. Help!
