My question says it all: search a topic on google, click a hit, and up come pages other than the one I've chosen, and when I try to navigate away, they impose pop ups asking, "Are you sure you want to miss this amazing opportunity?" How to go back to simple, clean browsing?

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs.
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.
