cannot update firefox

I am trying to update firefox. My husband, when trying to reset Firefox to default, loaded Firefox 3.5.5 back on. I previously had updated to 5.0.1 I believe. Anyhow, now wont let me update ... keeps saying I need to reboot computer to update or something. Wont let me update except to 3.6.18, then tells me there are no other updates. What should I do now?
