Can I stop preloading with a keyboard shortcut?

Sometimes I go to a site & preloading takes a loooong time. I've already seen that I don't want to stay there, but can't leave until the site fully loads. Is there a shortcut that will stop the preload, & maybe exit the site?

Ctrl + W seemed to do the job when I tried it just now. If I have further problems, I'll try the other solutions.

THANKS for the prompt help!

Thanks, but I've tried ESC. It doesn't help. For example, the link that you posted preloaded for about 10 seconds (& I hit Esc) & was still churning the hard drive as I returned to this page.

Start firefox in safe mode and select Continue In Safe Mode(in safe mode window) to see if this happen again. If the problem disappeared enable one by one your plugins to see if the problem reappear.

If you are in the tab then pressing ESC should stop the loading in that tab.
You can also close that tab with Ctrl+W if you want to abandon that page completely and open a new tab with Ctrl+T.

Set the browser.tabs.closeWindowWithLastTab pref to false on the about:config page to prevent closing the last tab from closing that window and make a close button appear if only one tab is open.
