In Internet Explorer my bookmarks (favorites) had all the folders at the beginning of the list. When I moved them over to Foxfire, the folders are mixed in alphabetically with the rest of the list. That defeats the purpose of the folders! (I had the folders for easy access to my most used bookmarks!) How can I put the folders all at the beginning of the list. I can't drag them, there are too many!

Hi Jay-Tee, to open the Library dialog to the Bookmarks section, you can either:

  • press Ctrl+Shift+b
  • use the menu: Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks

However, as a shortcut, could you try the following:

Open the Bookmarks Sidebar using Ctrl+b

Right-click "Bookmarks Menu"

Choose Sort by Name

For me, this brings all the folders to the top, in alpha order, then the bookmarks at that main level, in alpha order.

Any luck?

To avoid this you can move all the folders to the top and add a separator between the folders and the bookmarks.

Firefox c sorts bookmarks (including folders) between separators.

Thanks for your reply, but my problem is I don't know HOW to move all the folders to the top. When they carried over from Internet Explorer, the folders arrived already mixed in with the other bookmarks. And how does one add a separator?

You can export the favorites in IE to an HTML file and import that file in the Firefox Bookmarks Manager.

If you do not have the menu bar in IE then right-click the toolbar at the top to enable the Menu Bar.

  • Export the favorites in IE to an HTML file (bookmarks.html):
    File > Import and Export
  • Import the HTML file in Firefox:
Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Import Bookmarks from HTML

See "Import from another browser" and "Import from file":

You may have to move the bookmarks in the "From Internet Explorer" folder to anther bookmarks folder to make organizing work properly.
You can open the Bookmarks Manager (Library; Show All Bookmarks) and drag the bookmarks folder to the top to get all folders at the top.

I can't do anything FROM IE; it won't open for me. My computer man is tied up and can't work on it, but he said I should install Firefox to use as a browser instead. Since I couldn't download Firefox from IE, I had to download it using my husband's computer, onto a flash drive, and then install it from that into my computer. In IE I had the favorites (bookmarks) arranged with folders at the top of the list, but when I imported them into Firefox, they arrived with the folders all mixed in alphabetically with the rest of the bookmarks. You can imagine how long it takes me to go, for instance all the way down to USPS, and then back again to the top! When you say open the Bookmarks Manager (Library, Show All Bookmarks), I'm not finding Manager, nor am I finding Library. I click on Bookmarks on the toolbar and although Show All Bookmarks is at the top of that menu, farther down that menu is the whole bookmark list (with, as I said, the folders mixed in). I don't understand what you mean by "drag the bookmarks folder to the top to get all folders to the top"
