Disable "Unable to connect" frames / placeholders for blocked content. (browser.display.show_image_placeholders didn't do it)

HOSTS file blocks advertising domains. Firefox now shows "Unable to connect" pages everywhere on a site that an advertising domain is blocked. Long ago setting browser.display.show_image_placeholders to false fixed this. Doesn't anymore. How does this work now?

You should use Adblock Plus instead.

You can try the following, but error messages will pop up in dialog boxes instead of showing in the respective tab.

  1. Type about:config into the address bar and press Enter.
  2. To bypass the warning, press the big button labeled "I'll be careful, I promise!".
  3. In the search box, paste browser.xul.error_pages.enabled
  4. In the search results, double-click browser.xul.error_pages.enabled to set its value to false.
