The only way to open a places.sqlite file is to copy the files to a Firefox Profile Folder and open the Bookmarks and History Manager (Library; Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks).
If you currently have a corrupted or not working places.sqlite file in the profile folder then you need to delete or move that file and remove other places files as well to make Firefox restore the bookmarks from the most recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.
If that file already has corrupted bookmarks then you need to restore the bookmarks manually from an older JSON backup.
