Since 6 months, as soon as I open Firefox and type in a website, it just freezes. Its stops loading the website and also the whole firefox window freezes : it does not minimize and neither it pop backs. I have tried all the resolutions provided but none of them work for me. Really bad. If soon this does not resolve, I will trash out Firefox permanently from my laptop - though I do not want to do this :(

Can you try resetting Firefox and letting us know if that works?

  1. At the top of the Firefox window, click the Firefox button, go over to the Help sub-menu and select Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the Reset Firefox button in the upper-right corner of the Troubleshooting Information page.
  3. To continue, click Reset Firefox in the confirmation window that opens.
  4. Firefox will close and be reset. When it's done, a window will list the information that was imported. Click Finish and Firefox will open. That's it – you're done!

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

Try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

Hello Verdi and Cor-el, I did exactly the same as suggested by both of you and still I see the Firefox window becomes totally unresponsive - cannot minimize or maximize. Moreover I can also cannot use "Alt+Tab" to move to this window.

Whereas Chrome and IE have no issues at all. I have even tried uninstalling and re-installing the Browser but of no help. Any more clues ? Thanks for your help. Regards Harpreet

Does the window show that it is unresponsive? Is Flash running in a separate process during this time (bring up Task Manager by left clicking the task bar and clicking on task manager)?

When you say you have tried other browsers.. do you mean before hand or tried after Firefox failed? Because the way you have described this (minus the alt +tab) sounds like the new infamous flash bug that makes ALL browsers pause while flash day dreams every so many seconds.

Hello,

I tried looking at the task manager, I found no "Flash" process was running.

Should I look for some specific process which represents flash ?

Regards Harpreet

no that was it. Whenever my firefox would be unresponsive [for a few seconds] it would be using 0% cpu and there would be two instances of flash running. It wouldn't say it's not responding, but wouldn't respond until i waited or killed the flash processes.

Sorry I'm not much help but at least we eliminated the flash bug possibility. Good luck finding your answer, that is such a bummer. I'll try and help find some answers, but i'm not tech savvy :S
