I'm getting Server not found messages when I left click on links in e-mails or on webpages. However, if I right click on the links and go to "open in new tab" it will almost always work. If I type the address for the link directly in the address bar it will work. It's not just my computer either. My parents have both been having the same issues on their computers and we are all running Firefox (just upgraded to 29.0 last night but the issue has been happening for several days). I have Windows 8 and they have Windows 7.

Hello,

can you please try Firefox in Safe mode and see whether the problem still occurs or not. On Windows You can simply start Firefox in Safe Mode by holding down the shift key while starting Firefox.

see: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode

Note: The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Consider using it before going through a lengthy troubleshooting process.

That was one of the things I tried yesterday (before posting my question) but it didn't work. I also worked through all of the steps in the topic Server Not Found - Troubleshoot connection problems. I checked my computer for malware and quarantined what was found but the issue still is not resolved.

The first time I click on a link it won't work but then I can try the same link a 2nd time and it might work (sometimes takes a few tries). Other times it never works and I have to type the address in. Right clicking on the link and opening it in a new tab will usually work (although it's not consistent it's much more reliable and likely to work than left clicking). Sometimes just clicking on the "try again" button to reload the page will work but that's not consistent either.

It's very frustrating! I've even tried using IE but still have issues there so I'm wondering if it's something with the router or Suddenlink (my IP provider)?

It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

See:

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test.

Thank you so much!! The 2nd article you listed was the one I needed. After I modified Windows Firewall to add firefox.exe and restarted my computer it seems to be working. I will try this on my parents' computers tomorrow to see if it resolves their issues but I feel fairly confident that this has fixed the problem. Thank you again for your help!!

UPDATE 5-12-2014: I'm still having issues on my computer although they are more sporadic. Last night I was able to click on several links in e-mails that didn't work prior to the firewall modification and they worked after that so I thought the problem had been resolved. Apparently it hasn't been completely fixed or it's just more random than I initially thought. Sorry for the confusion.
