Every time I open Firefox, I lose the very top bar with the minimize and close buttons and I am unable to do anything on the browser because it is unresponsive. I have tried 4 times to delete and reinstall firefox, with no resolution. I need firefox to take my exams, so I really need it to work. I have attached an image of how the browser appears when I open it.

Firefox would normally show these control buttons at the at the right end of the tab bar.

Does any tooltip show if you hove the mouse in that area?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

You can toggle the title bar on/off via the "Title Bar" button at the bottom left in the Customize palette window to see if that makes the buttons appear. You can open the customization window via the "3-bar" menu button drop-down list.

You can try a different Windows theme and Windows background image (wallpaper) to see if that helps.
