We have a new satellite dish and the download speed usually runs around 5.89. This should run our emails quickly and does on some days. Do not ever know what days. Right now it is working like it did with what we had with century link which was the slowest dsl that was available to us because of where we live. It will not connect with our email server without retrying and then takes 5 minutes to send an email. On the days it works fast it is wonderful. I do not understand why it works great for a few days then basically runs like dsl which was horrible. We use firefox and thunderbird so do we need to do something different. Have used thunderbird for many years and like the format for the emails. Just need it to work correctly. Thank you

I doubt the issue is Thunderbird.

I know with my satellite TV, the appearance of a cloud in the sky in the wrong place makes it dodgy and heavy cloud simply stops it in it's tracks.

Other things may be background downloads occurring, like windows updates or in my case kids and music/video.

Latency can also be a shocker with satellite and if the ground station has sufficient back haul to actually service all the subscribers is an issue as well. If you want information on satellite and the potential pitfalls do some Googling on the Australian NBN project satellite service. New satellites and supposedly the best of the best. Basically those with it consider it a second rate service.

It might also be the day that your anti virus has decided to scan all your files, so Thunderbird has difficulty in accessing the hard disk.

I notice you are using Windows 7, it has been stable for a long time, but has anyone run disk cleanup from the start menu (Accessories/system tools) should happen fairly frequently and defragmenter is also on that menu. Microsoft said disks did not need that done back when XP came out, it was old hat. But Windows 10 arrived with regular defrags schedules by the operating system. So many in fact my machine ran slowly on certain days until I turned them off.

I tried everything you suggested and it worked for one evening. I think there may be something running in the background but not sure what. Most everything like auto window updates and auto defragging is shut off. We can run net flicks without a problem and what we are to get for downloading is working good so just not sure what to think. Thank you for trying just it is what it is I guess.
