in every PDF i open, the images have gotten "scrambled" (see attached), for lack of a better word. this has been happening for several months now... which means that this problem has spanned over a few updates (and refreshes).

if i open the PDF in IE, there's no problem. but that's a pain

unchecked "Use hardware acceleration when available"

seems to have fixed the problem

No need to delete. Maybe someone else will need the info.

You might also try a driver update: Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL.
