With firefox I get the dialog box "You have chosen to open: login-encrypted2.htmls What should firefox do with this file?" open with _BROWSE Save -- Firefox should display the indicated webpage in the browser! Why won't it do so?

Because Firefox is right. There is no .htmls for correct HTML file.
