How did TB Password magically change to a "secure mail key" for AT&T Yahoo mail account?

I have always used the password from my AT&T Yahoo account in Thunderbird ( the same one I use to sign on to web based mail). I recently found that my TB password has changed to a 16 character "secure mail key". I didn't change it. How did it happen ?
