Tbird 91.x accumulates legit messages in trash. Are these actually trash or legit? Afraid that if I empty them Tbird may empty all the header info in the inbox too.

Your ISP may have spam check features that send to trash. For example, I have a gmail account and have filters set to send some messages to trash. When I start TB, I see them in trash. Whether they are legit or not is up to you. TB sends junk to the junk folder, but not to trash.
