Night mode gone

My option for night mode to invert the colors for websites has suddenly disappeared from the menu. If I go to settings I can turn on dark mode but it does not work for a lot of websites. How can I get night mode back?

I have the same problem. Using that function a lot! Maybe somebody knows how to downgrade to a working version on iOs?

i have the same problem. i use firefox to read with online libraries at night, so night mode is a necessity. the dark mode doesn’t do anything for those websites except change the top and bottom of the browser.

Hey Jules,

Unfortunately, this seem to be missing after we launched version 124. See this bug report. I don't have more information at the moment, but we will communicate as we know more.

I, too depend on night mode to do my job as a videographer. Lack of this feature renders your browser inaccessible and unusable for my sensory disability, as well. Last night it disappeared from the menus in my iPad and Android phone. Setting the theme to dark mode in iOS does not darken webpages.

It seems that we have high number of votes on this thread. For others that are using this feature pretty significantly, I highly encourage you to share feedback about why this feature is important to you.

The team is currently doing an experiment. Since March 15, 50% of users no longer see Night Mode switch from the hamburger menu. We're using this experiment to monitor and evaluate the impact of removing, so it'll be hugely valuable to hear your feedback around this feature. Thanks!

I forwarded this feedback to the referenced bug report.

Yes! The night mode option disappeared from my Firefox for IOS a week ago, it reappears if I delete and reinstall the app but will disappear again with a few hours. I have to delete/reinstall every morning at 5am to read my morning news in the dark without blinding myself. I’m relieved to hear it’s not just me.

As someone who suffers from persistent migraine, night mode is important to me so I don’t trigger a migraine or worsen a migraine. The blinding white of most web pages is uncomfortable. If I’m experiencing a migraine, it can be downright painful. On browser I can easily use something like Dark Reader to deal with it. On mobile, most pages don’t have a dark mode styling, so the Firefox mobile dark mode toggle was a real lifesaver. I would very much like this feature to return. I would have to look for other options (if they even exist) for an iOS browser if dark mode were gone.

Even if another dark mode is coming in the future, even if this one is imperfect, having this one around in the meanwhile is a lifesaver that makes browsing more comfortable. I’m already typing this while in the beginning of a migraine worsened by looking at these white pages. I’d consider this an accessibility issue.

It really sucks not to have night mode anymore. My girlfriend and I work at vastly different times of day, and as it is, I can’t browse the web using Firefox when I get home without lighting up the bedroom, potentially disturbing her sleep. Any way to get removed from the 50% experiment? I’ll need to find another browser if this keeps up, it’s a bit silly tbh.

I am highly light sensitive and depend on night/dark mode across all my devices. I specifically began using Firefox because it was one of the few iOs browsers that had this feature. I would be using a different browser otherwise.

I really enjoy using Firefox but if this feature gets removed there will be no reason for me not to switch to Safari given it has a DarkReader extension now. White backgrounds are just way too much at night even on minimum brightness. They also consume more battery. I don’t understand why this was removed with no prior warning. Is it really that sparsely used?

I don't appreciate being treated like a lab rat by having an accessibility feature turned off with no explanation. Night Mode is the only reason I use Firefox on iOS. If it goes, so do I.

This has happened to me and until it returns, I will no longer be using firefox on my phone. I don’t like Safari, but it’s my only dark mode option. I’ve been an ios firefox user for years, but this will change it.

I agree with all- this feature was one of the biggest reasons I use Firefox over safari, chrome, etc. I do a lot of reading at night and not being able to turn on night mode wakes my wife up, and gives me a headache. Please bring night mode back!!!

Like many others in this thread, night mode was a lifesaver for me and was one of the reasons why I love using Firefox iOS. If it gets removed permanently, I’ll likely have to switch to another browser that has better options for vision issues which I don’t want to do.

I suffer from Diabetic Retinopathy and hence photophobia. To me, this removal is an Accessability issue. Dark Mode system theme doesn't work on most websites, including this one.

I also dont' appreciate being treated like a lab rat. I love Firefox and use it across all my devices and PCs, but like others, I will move aweay from it if this isn't re-enabled.

Mozilla website says "Accessibility is a fundamental part of Mozilla’s mission to ensure the internet is "open and accessible to all" and it is one of our key Diversity, Equity & Inclusion pillars at the Mozilla Foundation." Well, right now it's failing that mission.

This is a bad experiment, put this feature back as I use the dark mode for accessibility. Or I simply move to a different browser

I don’t usually post on things like this but I feel strongly enough about it that I’m going to do so. I’ve been using Firefox since version 1 on desktop and ever since there was a version for iOS.

This feature is really important to me. I use Firefox on my phone to do a lot of browsing in the evenings or when I first wake up in the morning and its removal makes it really difficult to do so. I understand that ideally websites would offer night mode but most don’t and are really hard to look at without it.

I also realise that it didn’t work perfectly (pictures getting inverted or weird site colours) but I would still turn it on.

Without it on my phone, I’ve been looking into alternatives like Safari with Dark Reader or using apps for frequently visited websites (which have dark mode in the app). It seems to me that removing this feature could drive more people away from browsers and the open web, which seems antithetical to Mozilla’s objectives.

I don’t want to give up on Firefox yet but it’s very hard to go back after getting used to having night mode. I like sharing history, bookmarks and tabs with my desktop PC but could probably live with messaging links to myself like I used to. These features are useful but I use night mode more. Safari on iOS also blocks trackers like Firefox does so seems like the best alternative.

This is an essential feature for me. Please put it back.

I understand if the implementation was problematic but getting rid of it for 50% of your user base to see if anyone would notice was a misstep. I rely on this feature.

A lot of people require this for accessibility reasons and the lack of extension support on iOS means we need to rely on built-in features like this in order to tailor our browsing experience.

Click the hamburger menu in Firefox, go to Settings, scroll down until you see Firefox and the version number. You’ll see something like “Firefox 124.0”.

Click that about 4 times until the Debug section appears. Go to Experiments, then find “iOS - Night Mode” and click that. Select “control” and the option to enable night mode should be back in the hamburger menu.

Honestly don’t know why they would disable the feature to collect analytics on usage.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! This works perfectly and I’ve got it back!
