Suddenly cannot send emails, except in Trouble-shooting mode
Hello! ... Suddenly I cannot send emails from Thunderbird. I still receive incoming emails as normal, and all other functions seem to work. But I cannot send. When I switch to Trouble-shooting mode, I can send emails, but when I switch back to regular mode, I can't send. I can save the email, but when I click "send" the send button and all the other buttons at the top of the window fade, and nothing happens. I have not changed any settings in Thunderbird or my email provider (Kolabnow). I have checked and the settings are exactly as Kolab requires: smtp.kolabnow.com .... Port 465 ... SSL/TLS. Thunderbird updates automatically, so I'm running the latest version. I'm on Mac OS 13.5.2 (Ventura). How do I fix this? Are others reporting the same problem? (I have tested and can still send emails from Kolab's web site, just not from Thunderbird.)

Generally that means you have a bad addon or antivirus program. You make no mention of what you have installed in that regard so I suggest to reset everything when you entry troubleshooting mode. If that does not work look at what your antivirus is doing. It probably thinks it is scanning mail but failing to do anything at all.

Many thanks, Matt! I don't have an anti-virus program, but I do have one add-on. When I disabled it, I could send emails again; if I enabled it again, I couldn't send. So that isolated the problem: it was a defective add-on. I deleted the add-on, then went back to the original add-on software and reinstalled it. Bingo! The add-on works and I can send emails again. Your quick response is much appreciated; thanks!
it is always good to know about addons that cause issues. So what was it?
The add-on (called Connectix) is the link to allow Antidote (a bilingual English-French grammar and spelling corrector, plus dictionaries) to run in Thunderbird and other email managers and word-processors. Antidote is an excellent software, and I've had no problems running it in TBird and other programs for years, so I suspect my recent problem was not in the add-on itself, but in something I inadvertently did to corrupt it. Once I deleted Connectix and re-installed it, everything works fine again.
