How do I type symbols on e-mails or Facebook, Word Pad?

Like degrees, hearts, clovers, smiley faces, etc. I see other people have typed them, and there used to be Symbol typeface sets at key combo "Ctrl + W" inside of Word Perfect. I have Windows 7 now & use Mozilla Firefox 90% of the time, and Internet Explorer 10%, and regular typing in Word Pad that came with my Gateway Laptop made 10/22/09.

The Symbol typeface doesn't work in Firefox.

You need to use the Unicode version of such characters and install a font that covers those symbols
