I operate a home domain server. I run two computers side by side logged into the same account. If one computer is running Firefox (also occurs with Thunderbird) I cannot open a Firefox session on the other computer. IE allows this.

You can only open a specific profile with one Firefox instance.
You need a separate (second) profile if you want to open Firefox from that other computer.
You may also need to use the -no-remote command line switch.
